What am I doing wrong?

I have 2 Ergo-serve 1 liter cream dispensers.  They look nice and work well.  That is until milk gets around the gasket.  And there it turns foul and rots.  Here is the issue I have.  I have taken the black plastic handle off to clean it out and I have to reassemble it with a hammer.  If I can make it go back together at all.  Anyone else out there using them?  Any hints?

Maybe you should let your extremely good looking business partner have a go at it.

I have a hell of a time getting them on. I use the counter and my hip to pop it back on. No hammer.
