Hi all. We are very seriously looking at getting something going back home this year. We have been looking at cafes since 2007, but the selling price vs the net profit (and of course the ROI) were not realistic back then. Since November last year prices for cafes have begun to drop,k some expedentially. I am seeing some cafes selling for less than half of what was wanted for them early 2007. My question is how is cafe segement going? Obviously the kiwi economy in general is struggling, but P&L numbers I am seeing from prespective purchases are still OK (or at the most sales are down 5-8% on last year). Would appreciate any comments...

I dont know much, but according to my boss in Nelson, all the crappy cafes have gone and the old through back to the lammington is over, He has noticed a younger crowed drinking coffee sine starbucks moved in which is normal, but thats just nelson, hes been open for 7 years ish and has had his best year ever, I would imagine that weelys is still full of stiff comp but Ive been watching mojo grow and grow, But I still like emporio coffee they seem to be getting stronger every day according to me sister in law who live in wellys. Were would you open Alun we are planing to be back in NZ late feb, And ready to roll.

Mate, already open. Just a roastery mind you. Not yet at the stage where we are keen to do the cafe thing in NZ. More focusing on Asia and perhaps the Middle East for cafes- keep the focus on roasting in NZ/Australia. Our cafe business is kind of the old style kiwi cafe (as I remember it in the 90's). Not that keen on the plug and play cake/muffin/sandwich style I have seen popping up in Auckland. Keen to talk more about your feb plans.

Brady, thank you for the response. You made a great point about the opening week needing the higher capacity. I would imagine the opening week, as a first impression, would be critical in putting a shop's best step (and product) forward to encourag…

I believe your conclusion is correct. If your growth and profitability curves match most cases that I'm aware of, you'll be less able to afford equipment after 1 year than you are before you open. Buy good quality equipment at the start that will me…

Agreed, it is best as a subtle hint to complement another flavor. I like pairing it with a nut flavor, caramel, or vanilla... but only in levels that do not totally overwhelm the coffee. If you have a softer apple flavor available, it is a nice comp…

Totally agreed. KvdW + LM all the way.

I understand the philosophy, and know that some shops do this, but this doesn't seem to me to be an appropriate use of the sanitizer. Remember that Quats is a sanitizer, not a cleaner. Sanitizer is meant to sanitize solid surfaces that are already…

I was reading through some business plan literature and an example of a business that planned to buy smaller-capacity equipment, a lower-quality register system, etc with plans to purchase higher capacity and quality equipment in the future as the c…

Is there some consensus on a preferred method for cold tea prep? I would imagine the product is different with each method, but is there a majority and minority camp? Just curious.

Alun, are these the hills you will be tramping over next month? The hills you are inviting us to join you on? I'm getting short of breath thinking of the 38C temp and 98% humidity. [If I was 30 years younger...] I just noticed our neighbour over the…

Thanks I am an artist by trade and when we use a sprayer, we first filter the paint through a very large bag made of fine mesh. ( size of a 1 gallon paint can) they run about 99 cents at Home Depot. I also keep getting different ground sizes...mean…
