are there any programs for people wanting to go and work on a coffee plantation somewhere in the world? or if any growers need help harvesting and whatnot, I would love to take the Barista Exchange a step further and harvest some beans!
I feel the same way. I would love to spend a month or two planting and growing a coffee bush!
I once took a walk through the forest near Hannah in Maui, and came accross a few coffee trees that had a nice bunch of ripe cherries. I enjoyed experimenting with them, sluuuurrrrp.
Costa Rica is very nice and safe with lots of great coffee. There are many great award winning micro mills here on small farms that the owners still pick their own coffee and enjoy what they do, so you get a family feel. The big farms you will just get lost in the mass of migrant workers. I tell people to come and visit us and are welcome to come pick and process their own coffee. Many people come and want to spend a week harvesting. They last about 1 day and then head for the beach. Its really hard dirty work. Still they all leave very excited about the experience and with the determination to roast or pull a shot with just that much more care since they got to see what it takes to give them great beans. Just happy to see people wanting to connect to origin
Wonderful...too busy with harvest out here so had not been to Bx to see your post. I hope you have already had the experience of picking coffee beans--no easy job for the good folks who do it. You are welcome to visit our farm next crop if you have not yet had the experience. In fact, we have a phenomenal need for pickers and lose most of our precious beans, along with thousands of other farmers, most years lately. You see, we are local Puerto Rico/USA, and suffer from the industrialization/high level of education of our society, so that lately pickers are few up in the alturas or high mountain coffee region. As Hawaii does, we too want to bring documented workers from other countries who would then return home with good earnings to also benefit their families/communities. Obviously, we are a safe origin to visit since La Isla del Encanto--Island of Enchantment--is a magnet for tourists. The experience you seek may be a vocational vacation, but I know it would be hard work. We do great coffee (microlot) from farming to marketing green beans/roast. So good to see folks with interests similar to ours, Israel/Sandra
Yes, it can be done. I would talk to the guys at Sunergos in Louisville. They did it on a shoe string like that. But they did most all the work their selves, bought used equipment, and worked 100 plus hours a week and didn't pay themselves. Their wi…
like i said, i just pop it open manually. i bought a receipt printer but it's not hooked up cause i haven't needed it yet - my credit card machine can print cash receipts if needed (just enter the amount).
i'm not sure, at least for espresso machin…
As a roaster, I have a question. Who can afford to sell beans at $4 a pound? That's my purchase price for green on many I sell. We have a tiered system. Based on the price of the bean its self and how much people order. So, for instance, you only or…
Jared, admittedly I was looking for replies geared more towards the practice of buying for the future as opposed to conserving operations funding by starting with lower-end gear, but your recommendation looks incredible! Thank you very much!

lemme throw you a couple observations from my first month of being open:
1) i bought a 3 group LM GB/5 used, cause it was a good deal and in good condition. my initial plan was to buy a new 2-group linea and PID mod it, but the used GB/5 was cheape…
it IS an explicit requirement by the north carolina health department, at least, and i think it applies in other states. brady you may have not had a health inspector tell you that, but it is in the regulations. any cloths used for wiping surfaces h…
Brady, thank you for the response.
You made a great point about the opening week needing the higher capacity. I would imagine the opening week, as a first impression, would be critical in putting a shop's best step (and product) forward to encourag…
I believe your conclusion is correct. If your growth and profitability curves match most cases that I'm aware of, you'll be less able to afford equipment after 1 year than you are before you open. Buy good quality equipment at the start that will me…
