Barista Exchange

the world's premiere online community for the specialty coffee industry

Joining and jumping in with both feet, so to speak.

I am working to attempt to set up Mid-Atlantic buying groups for Cup of Excellence coffees. Part of what I would like to do is set up cupping events, similar to what Atlas Importers, Cafe Imports, and Royal Coffee NY do for many of the CoE origins.

I started on this journey a bit late in the process for the first 2009 origin, Colombia. The Colombia auction is this Thursday, April 23. I have roasted all the samples and will be cupping them tonight and tomorrow night. I would like to invite anyone who is interested to stop by my place in Alexandria and participate. Future origin cuppings will likely be at Cafes or other public locations--the timing of this auction, my late start, and last weekend's SCAA expo have prevented that for the Colombia cupping. Please feel free to drop me a line here, or email me at chad at noquartercoffee.com. All are welcome, and I know many of you have excellent palates from what I've seen at shops and at the weekly Counter Culture cuppings.

I will post further information here as I set up additional events for future origins. Next up is El Salvador (auction is June 4, international cupping and final selections are next week).

Chad,

Trish and I might be interested, as would a couple of our baristas, but "tonight and tomorrow night?" Don't you like being able to fall asleep? :-)

Any chance of doing something earlier in the day? Trish has been on CoE international juries a few times... but I also know she doesn't like to cup too late in the day.

Let us know!

Nick,

Problem is that coffee is an avocation--my vocation requires that I be in the office during the day. Cupping tonight here at home--perhaps could swing by Murky tomorrow afternoon if things are quiet, if you're willing to host. Figure we could work half the samples in 60-90 min, if we're diligent.

My focus is on the middle lots, as their the ones most likely to be reasonable buys (top 3 will likely get testosterone-infused bidding as in past years).

Depends on what "afternoon" means. :-)

I have a literal definition. After + noon. :-)
Easiest for me is say 3:30 to 4ish; I can take swing leaving work early.

Just cupped 5 of them. Five more in a few...

I am working on my menu in my shop, and am trying to decide about my brewing offerings. I will be having a pourover bar, rather than airpots of mechanical drip coffee, due to my commitment to providing the freshest cup possible. I plan to have a dri…

Yep... that's about right. All machines have some benefits and fans, or else they wouldn't be in business. For a fast paced drive-thru, I'd say make sure it is a big boiler and quick steamer. Forget the two groups... you'll be 3 group territory. Yo…

Hey! Thanks for your suggestions, it's awesome to find someone so willing to be helpful. I actually did find a position as morning manager at a Coffee Shop/Wine Bar here called Perugino, so my immediate search is over, but I'll still check out your…

It's not that hard to make. Google it and find something you like in the way of a recipe. Fun to experiment. Time allowing that is.

A naked PF is absolutely paramount for me in successfully adjusting my grinder's setting. And in the beginning, was just as important in figuring out the correct distribution/tamping technique.
