Barista Exchange

the world's premiere online community for the specialty coffee industry

Hi everyone,

I wanted to give a shout out to the member points leaders and expose anyone who is not aware of this feature to it. Basically members can earn points for activity on the site. The highest points scoring option is inviting new members, so feel free to invite your whole address book if you'd like.

Click here to see the leaderboard

Here is more info on the Points System:

Points Breakdown:

Make a friends = 10
Join a group = 20
Start a discussion in the forum = 10
Post in the forum = 50
Post a blog = 50
Add a photo = 10
Add a video = 10
Add a song = 5
Add an event = 25
Add a comment = 5
Receive a comment = 5
Each invitation you send =100

There are 5 things that make up this feature.

1.) Activity - How active a member is.
2.) Rank - The name of the level reached.
3.) Points - Points that each activity is awarded.
4.) Awards - The graphic icon that shows rank.
5.) The Leaderboard - This is where you can view the Top Rankings for this site

Your POINTS will only update when you View your page!

You can climb up through the Ranks by doing the things you do everyday on www.baristaexchange.com.

NOTE: You need to Click the cup icon on your page to View the Rankings Leaderboard. Be aware that other's points will only show when they view the Leaderboard too!

As you gain a higher rank and are given more points - the Award icon on your page will change to reflect your rising Rank.

Click on the points to view the Activity of the member who's page you are visiting. You can check up on any members Activity at any time to see how they are doing.

Please NOTE - If a Site Administrator catches you abusing this system by posting SPAM or frivolous comments to gain points - they will delete those and your points will be automatically deducted. Comments posted to your own comment-wall will not be recognized by the system.

This is dumb Matt - is there any way to opt out?

ha. I appreciate your frankness Stephen. You don't have to participate if you don't want to, and it's just for fun, not meant to be serious. No way to "opt out" other than to ignore it.

I think this is rigged. I bet Matt gave himself all those points when he created the website. How are we suppose to catch up? lol

I guess it's kind of like flavored drip - some people think they like it...lol.
It's just not for me, but I am good at ignoring things so no harm done.

Scott's comment proves how well people like it, apparently, as I am thinking "Who cares if it IS rigged?" =]

I am always up for suggestions ... for the time being, the best way to gain points is to invite your friends and co-workers to join Barista Exchange - 100 Points. I'll give it a week or two and then re-think the points system if members give suggestions. Thanks guys.

Hey I was only joking, I didn't mean to start a fire on this discussion. I like the points, as a matter fact I will invite all my employees to the BX.

So no extra points awarded at regional comps for having lots of bX points? What would be really great is if this translated to discounts at industry partners... Espresso Parts, Everything Coffee, etc. THAT would be worth paying attention to.

I do think, however, that the weightings on the points-for-activities scale do reveal which of our activities Matt values most :)

I appreciate everyone's input on this, and I made some changes to the points system to promote site activity and participation, not so "invite" heavy. Hope this helps as I really appreciate all of our active members. Look above for the changes. Thanks.

I didn't mean to insult, and Teresa made it sound like she was just doing dishes before adjusting the OP to clarify. And certainly if just touching the rag while wiping the wand is destroying your hands your solution is WAY too strong. -bry
