We are closed. We tried being open on Memorial Day but the it cost us more in utilities then we brought in. Our employees said there are just some holidays that are all about getting together with family and having cookouts... so we decided to be one of those families today.

We are open on most Holiday's, today included. Though closing early 2pm ('bout 50 minutes). Been decent day at the register so far, on par with most Saturday's. Memorial Day was decent too. Many of our regulars have come to expect and appreciate us to being open. Hell, was even open last Thanksgiving day morning and had decent business. Only Holiday didn't open was Christmas Day. At least, I don't think I was open any of Christmas day but might have been, memory failing me and Ben (barista on shift) can't remember for sure either!

We are open for 2 hours. Which doesn't seem like much, but we are pretty busy! Our customers appreciate that we are open on most holidays, even if for a few hours. They can come early get there coffee, and have the rest of the day for the cookouts or whatever they plan to do.:)

Yeah, we had a short day today (7-12) and it was surely slower today than on other weekends. We had our regulars that stayed in town and they were stoked we were open. We had an impromptu cupping to keep ourselves busy, so all-in-all it was a pretty chill day. Happy Birthday America!

Pretty slow here also (portland suburbs). 6am-7pm. My usual Sunday Schedule. For me, being open is about people recognizing us as being available any time, even if we're not busy enough to justify it. I really dislike shops closing early without it being announced. That "hey, it's slow. let's go home" crap bothers me. So even if i lose money today, with any luck the concept will make me money consistently in the future.

Besides, i just spent the day pulling shots with the new guy.

We were packed!!! Our store closes at 23:00; but, I didn't get home until 03:00. That time also included my lunch break, but most of that was spent cleaning and doing prep.

Being in a port town, and only a short walk from the harbour, it's not uncommon for visiting Americans to dock their boats and begin wandering around the village. We're only one block from the water's edge, so, we got slammed.

Everyone seemed to enjoy their stay, but, the best part was seeing their faces when we gave them back one and two dollar coins in change. For those who don't know: A Canadian two dollar coin is about the size of a Hummer tire.

I was not working myself, but my local cafe (that I will be working for soon) was packed on the 4th! It's in the PDX area, just out in Gresham. It was way crazier than usual.

lemme throw you a couple observations from my first month of being open: 1) i bought a 3 group LM GB/5 used, cause it was a good deal and in good condition. my initial plan was to buy a new 2-group linea and PID mod it, but the used GB/5 was cheape…

Brady, thank you for the response. You made a great point about the opening week needing the higher capacity. I would imagine the opening week, as a first impression, would be critical in putting a shop's best step (and product) forward to encourag…

I believe your conclusion is correct. If your growth and profitability curves match most cases that I'm aware of, you'll be less able to afford equipment after 1 year than you are before you open. Buy good quality equipment at the start that will me…

Agreed, it is best as a subtle hint to complement another flavor. I like pairing it with a nut flavor, caramel, or vanilla... but only in levels that do not totally overwhelm the coffee. If you have a softer apple flavor available, it is a nice comp…

I understand the philosophy, and know that some shops do this, but this doesn't seem to me to be an appropriate use of the sanitizer. Remember that Quats is a sanitizer, not a cleaner. Sanitizer is meant to sanitize solid surfaces that are already…

Is there some consensus on a preferred method for cold tea prep? I would imagine the product is different with each method, but is there a majority and minority camp? Just curious.

Alun, are these the hills you will be tramping over next month? The hills you are inviting us to join you on? I'm getting short of breath thinking of the 38C temp and 98% humidity. [If I was 30 years younger...] I just noticed our neighbour over the…
