Hi Everyone,
Just need your advise please. I'm new to this coffee industry and really want to learn about this coffee business and also would like to open a coffee shop in Toronto but don't know where to start. I went to LV June'09 for the Coffee Fest and really enjoyed it.
Can you help me where to get the best Barista Training and how to start my coffee business.
The American Barista & Coffee School right here in Portland, Oregon will get you up to speed in no time, both in bar skills and coffee business basics.
I would have to agree with Fraser - No need to travel to Portland and use $$$ that can be put into your shop. Check with Zuccarini and also check out http://www.canadianbaristaacademy.com/ they have some classes in July. The classes cover everything from basic to advanced.
pay my plane ticket and I'll do it for free. I need a vacation. I've also been around the block a bit. check out www.cultivacoffee.com. my number is 402-802-1909. I could take about two full days if you want. I've judged several barista competitions, along with a COE cupping in Honduras. I've also help design and build out a few coffee shops and a roasting facility, which I also certified as an organic facility. I own the company, do all the inventory, accounting, buying, and marketing.
Please! I need a vacation! Or, you can come here too, and stay for free, and train for free. I would say our training could encompass as much as any other school, or more, if you want some training on roasting and cupping coffees.
You will need to look into schools...and if possible work in a bar. Working in a bar gives great experience in the real world. As you start down this road you need to arm yourself with a constant desire to learn...even beyond what you are taught. We are all learning new things in this industry no matter how long any of us has been in it.
Learn from someone or from a school that puts you on the right path.
Hey!
Thanks for your suggestions, it's awesome to find someone so willing to be helpful. I actually did find a position as morning manager at a Coffee Shop/Wine Bar here called Perugino, so my immediate search is over, but I'll still check out your…
A naked PF is absolutely paramount for me in successfully adjusting my grinder's setting. And in the beginning, was just as important in figuring out the correct distribution/tamping technique.
I'm not sure if you're looking for different importers/ roasters, but I know that Cafe Imports has a great deal of information on most all coffee they carry. I'm not sure if they offer there coffee roasted already or if its all green.
