Barista Exchange

the world's premiere online community for the specialty coffee industry

Hi Everyone,
Just need your advise please. I'm new to this coffee industry and really want to learn about this coffee business and also would like to open a coffee shop in Toronto but don't know where to start. I went to LV June'09 for the Coffee Fest and really enjoyed it.

Can you help me where to get the best Barista Training and how to start my coffee business.

Thank you so much.

The American Barista & Coffee School right here in Portland, Oregon will get you up to speed in no time, both in bar skills and coffee business basics.

ABCs in Portland Oregon!

I'll start by saying that I haven't been to this establishment, only have heard good things...

I think that Darkhorse Espresso (no website) could probably help you out with training. I do know they are pretty solid.

But to repeat the recommendations above, ABC in Portland is really your best bet. Intelligentsia puts on a good school as well.

Have you been to Zuccarini Co. Ltd. in Toronto?
Call Michael Riesberry there and he should be able to set you off in the right direction.

I would have to agree with Fraser - No need to travel to Portland and use $$$ that can be put into your shop. Check with Zuccarini and also check out http://www.canadianbaristaacademy.com/ they have some classes in July. The classes cover everything from basic to advanced.

pay my plane ticket and I'll do it for free. I need a vacation. I've also been around the block a bit. check out www.cultivacoffee.com. my number is 402-802-1909. I could take about two full days if you want. I've judged several barista competitions, along with a COE cupping in Honduras. I've also help design and build out a few coffee shops and a roasting facility, which I also certified as an organic facility. I own the company, do all the inventory, accounting, buying, and marketing.

Please! I need a vacation! Or, you can come here too, and stay for free, and train for free. I would say our training could encompass as much as any other school, or more, if you want some training on roasting and cupping coffees.

You will need to look into schools...and if possible work in a bar. Working in a bar gives great experience in the real world. As you start down this road you need to arm yourself with a constant desire to learn...even beyond what you are taught. We are all learning new things in this industry no matter how long any of us has been in it.
Learn from someone or from a school that puts you on the right path.

Best to you in your business!

Royal has a fair amount of info on their website for some of their coffees. They are also very helpful if you ask, they certainly know where their coffees come from. If you're looking for something smaller, I highly suggest http://www.coffeeshrub.co

I personally use Big Train Spiced Chai at my shop and people love it. It is a powder. We mix it with milk and it's really delicious. If you are at all in or around the Bellingham/ Seattle area, my most favorite chai is Harmony Chai brewed by Holly D…

The whole pre-infusion thing is a little bit overrated imho. For instance on an E61 machine, you've already got pre-infusion by design. You're really not accomplishing a whole lot more by adding to it. Take for example the majority of La Spaziale Vi…

As I understand it, the contemporary school of thought is of the mind that your best bet is to use unrested beans; however, this will only buy you a very small window, beyond the ±30 minutes alloted for the espresso ground coffee to degas, where qua…

We're moving our coffee operation into a much smaller space, and I'm considering pre-grinding a small amount of decaf at the beginning of the day (maybe using the Bunn drip grinder set on "espresso") and keeping it in a small Cambro container by the…

I actually meant to post the above reply ^^ in the discussion entitled "Best commercial espresso machine", but I suppose it could be relevant here as well. Still getting used to this forum's layout! :p

+1!! Absolutely quoted for truth!!! There are a lot of shops and serious home baristas out there who'll have something like a Linea or GS3 mated with a Mazzer Major. Having had both a commercial flat burr grinder and now a conical one, I think the…
